<br />
Today is the first day of the year 2013 and I'm fulfilling a promise that I've made to myself - to start posting on my blog again. It's been more than 6 months since I've posted last time. It was so much going on during these last months that I had neither time nor inspiration to post on my blog. During the winter season break not much is actually happening in the garden so it's a perfect time to look back on the past season and recall my impressions from it.<br />
Garden season 2012 will be remembered as one of the rainiest seasons in Stockholm area. There were precious few warm and sunny days. This kind of weather was perfect for most of the plants in my garden. Hostas, rhododendrons, astilbe and others were very happy. On the other hand it was a tough summer for my dahlias. Due to rather cold start in June they were growing very slow until mid July. Then they finally started to bloom but with so much rain flowers were getting spoiled very quickly especially on large-blooming varieties. <br />
Autumn was long and mild. Last dahlia tubers were dug up in the end of October. And some new perennials and spring-flowering bulbs I was still planting in November. Winter started exactly on December 1st with frost and snow. We got almost 40 cm of snow during first week of December with temperatures down to -15°C in the following weeks. Hopefully, snow will stay thick and keep my plant beds warm and cosy until spring.<br />

But there are so many great varieties out there that I don't have in my garden yet. Of course, I couldn't resist and placed an order for 8 more hostas to my favorite hosta vendor <a href="http://www.hostaworld.nl/">Hostaworld</a>. I decided to add some larger varieties to my collection such as golden medium to large 'Dawn's Early Light' bred by <a href="http://www.hostalady.com/">Olga Petryszyn</a>, golden large with piecrusted edges 'Dancing queen', blue large 'Fleet Week' with rippled edges, golden margined medium to large upright 'Alex Summers', large arching 'Arc de Triomphe', 'Lakeside Prophecy Fulfilled' - a white edged sport of 'Lakeside Prophecy' with heavily corrugated leaves, 'Frisian Pride' - a recent introduction of Bate Aukema from Netherlands and 'Lakeside Paisley Print' - medium with wavy leaves with a "feather" pattern of the narrow creamy center. Plants arrived in a perfect condition and look stunning. Tomorrow they will be planted in their permanent or almost permanent locations.<br />

<i>Rhododendron </i>hybrid 'Kokardia' we have planted in the garden 3 years ago and this year it finally got ready to bloom. I was afraid that we'd miss the flowering since we left for vacation right before the opening of the first flower. But due to a chilly and rainy weather during the first week of June the flowering slowed down and we arrived in a perfect time to see it in its full power. It was definitely worth to wait for 3 years to see the show. Clusters of large purple-pink flowers with a prominent wine red blotch. The plant itself is neat and vigorous with glossy dark-green leaves. This hybrid was raised by the famous German breeder Hans Hachmann.<br />

<br />
Botanical garden of Potsdam is situated right next to the park so we used an opportunity to check it out as well.<br />
<br />
Although I'm not in to rock gardening I was impressed by the large alpine garden.<br />
<center><br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eXmi0QcdiL0/T8-2RrxgMGI/AAAAAAAACsw/oU2gUwmxpyA/s1600/Alpine-garden.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" width="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eXmi0QcdiL0/T8-2RrxgMGI/AAAAAAAACsw/oU2gUwmxpyA/s1000/Alpine-garden.jpg" /></a></center><br />
<br />
I liked a lot this hosta and Astilbe planting along a stream. Hostas are absolutely happy in such conditions - light shadow and plenty of water accessible for their roots.<br />
<center><br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lqc2-p5qDnc/T8-2SWwW6BI/AAAAAAAACs4/SE_6kzUkt0I/s1600/Hosta-Astilbe-stream.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" width="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lqc2-p5qDnc/T8-2SWwW6BI/AAAAAAAACs4/SE_6kzUkt0I/s1000/Hosta-Astilbe-stream.jpg" /></a></center><br />
<br />
This relative of Rhododendrons <i>Kalmia latifolia</i> caught up my attention with its graceful flowers.<br />
<center><br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MUtUQOoxyng/T8-2SldWGWI/AAAAAAAACtI/WegYTy26-60/s1600/Kalmia-latifolia.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" width="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MUtUQOoxyng/T8-2SldWGWI/AAAAAAAACtI/WegYTy26-60/s1000/Kalmia-latifolia.jpg" /></a></center><br />
<br />
In my opinion <i>Adiantum pedatum</i> is the most beautiful garden fern. This gorgeous specimen is called <i>Adiantum pedatum var. aleuticum</i>. It has blue-green color and slightly different shape of pinnae than <i>Adiantum pedatum</i>.<br />
<center><br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0sBYKxF69Mg/T8-2TJEkokI/AAAAAAAACtU/zoERBV_O6ao/s1600/Adiantum-pedatum-aleuticum.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" width="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0sBYKxF69Mg/T8-2TJEkokI/AAAAAAAACtU/zoERBV_O6ao/s1000/Adiantum-pedatum-aleuticum.jpg" /></a></center><br />

Dahlia 'Bishop of Llandaff' is planted along the water cascade.<br />

</div>Olgahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06171908843920946025noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-944410182430300154.post-74475568208924422442012-06-01T14:25:00.000+02:002012-06-01T14:25:16.051+02:00Dahlia stake forest<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tgbQxgVbZ90/T8ixbLpAIgI/AAAAAAAACcE/LadhHhmbNLg/s1600/Stakes-20120521.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tgbQxgVbZ90/T8ixbLpAIgI/AAAAAAAACcE/LadhHhmbNLg/s1000/Stakes-20120521.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Right now dahlia garden looks like a forest of stakes. I always put stakes before planting dahlias. It's easier for me to position each plant in the bed when all stakes are in place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QwTVfnyOmWg/T8ixbY4x1XI/AAAAAAAACcQ/G8r_SMaJNg4/s1600/Stakes-20120521-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QwTVfnyOmWg/T8ixbY4x1XI/AAAAAAAACcQ/G8r_SMaJNg4/s1000/Stakes-20120521-2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
So for a few weeks dahlia bed looks a bit weird, but dahlias are growing vigorously, and stakes will be hidden behind the lush foliage very soon. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-29k3PzRkFXE/T8ixb-CFTfI/AAAAAAAACcc/NqoWOkdmzRs/s1600/Dahlia-garden-20120523.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-29k3PzRkFXE/T8ixb-CFTfI/AAAAAAAACcc/NqoWOkdmzRs/s1000/Dahlia-garden-20120523.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>Olgahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06171908843920946025noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-944410182430300154.post-82329080838227876142012-05-28T22:30:00.000+02:002012-05-28T22:30:39.731+02:00Dahlia update All dahlias are planted. This year I had very narrow time window to plant everything and it was a bit stressful. But now it's done and I got time to update <a href="http://olgochka.blogspot.de/p/my-dahlia-list.html">my collection catalog</a>. There are about 180 plants of 83 varieties planted in the garden this year. Some are new for the collection. Some I liked so much that they were kept since last year. Some varieties are out of the garden since they didn't fit my taste or were lost during winter storage.<br />
Among newly acquired dahlias are several varieties originating from France. Some of them are low growing varieties suitable for planting in pots. Here is a preview of these varieties.<br />

The latest of my tulips are in full bloom now. Two of them have the word 'Black' in their name. <i>'Black Parrot'</i> is a parrot tulip with deep wine colored petals, not black but very dark. Beautiful shape.<br />
<br />
<center><span style="color: #ccfb5d;"><b><i>Black Parrot</i></b></span></center><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8cok_A6KG60/T71PTDOOzZI/AAAAAAAACYE/FazgRSsftp0/s1600/Black-Parrot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8cok_A6KG60/T71PTDOOzZI/AAAAAAAACYE/FazgRSsftp0/s640/Black-Parrot.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Next is fringed tulip <i>'Black Jewel'</i>. Dark purple petals with heavily fringed tips. Not really black as well, but the shape is gorgeous.<br />
<br />
<center><span style="color: #ccfb5d;"><b><i>Black Jewel</i></b></span></center><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Pb38kjqs11M/T71PSbpwq-I/AAAAAAAACX4/2EuwZk89EIg/s1600/Black-Jewel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Pb38kjqs11M/T71PSbpwq-I/AAAAAAAACX4/2EuwZk89EIg/s640/Black-Jewel.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
And finally the most black tulip I ever seen - single late tulip <i>'Queen of the Night'</i>. The color of this tulip is very difficult to catch in the photo. In bright sun it has dark burgundy tint, but in the shadow or at dusk the color of silky petals turns to almost black as on the photo at the top of this post or on the close-up photo.<br />
<br />

Today looked like summer. First dahlias were planted out and more waiting for their turn. Almost all tulips are blooming. Two double late tulips <i>'Cilesta'</i> and <i>'Carnaval De Nice'</i> are my first double tulips. Perhaps, I will skip that type of tulips for next year, flowers are small and unruly in comparison with perfect shape of <i>'Crystal Beauty'</i> or <i>'Yokohama'</i> for example.<br />

Couple of days ago I added 6 new varieties to my collection of Garden Phlox <i>Phlox paniculata</i>. All these varieties originated from Russia. Russian Garden Phlox varieties are well known around the world and it was my cherished dream to get some of them for my own collection. During my last trip to Saint Petersburg I visited one of the best perennial nurseries of North-West Russia <a href="http://www.sflora.ru/">Severnaya Flora</a>. They have an impressive assortment of perennials in general and Russian Garden Phlox in particular. Here comes a preview of my new additions.<br />
<br />

Isn't it nice to come back home after a few days long trip in May and notice all the changes in the garden? Just in 5 days garden has changed remarkably. Most of the tulips were still in bud when I left but now many are flowering. My first time attempt to plant tulips in color combinations seems to work well. Here are couple of examples.<br />
<br />
<center><span style="color: #ccfb5d;"><b><i>Tulipa fosteriana 'Orange Emperor'</i></b> and Single Early Tulip <b><i>'Yokohama'</i></b></span></center><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XHpczEHD_Y0/T7O1FjY5-6I/AAAAAAAACVU/68pXnrn1xK4/s1600/orange-yellow.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XHpczEHD_Y0/T7O1FjY5-6I/AAAAAAAACVU/68pXnrn1xK4/s640/orange-yellow.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<center><span style="color: #ccfb5d;">Fringed Tulip <b><i>'Crystal Beauty'</i></b> and Darwin Hybrid Tulip <b><i>'Golden Apeldoorn'</i></b></span></center><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KgY97qU381M/T7O1IBfEd4I/AAAAAAAACVc/T5gXMpv0-_Y/s1600/Red-yellow.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KgY97qU381M/T7O1IBfEd4I/AAAAAAAACVc/T5gXMpv0-_Y/s640/Red-yellow.jpg" /></a></div><br />

Perennials are growing very fast, they look different every day. Foliage is freshly green and soft on touch.<br />
<br />
<center><span style="color: #ccfb5d;"><b><i>Aruncus aethusifolius</i></b></span></center><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-A4lbsnn--K0/T7O1ZDr69LI/AAAAAAAACWE/xClq644Ca04/s1600/Aruncus.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-A4lbsnn--K0/T7O1ZDr69LI/AAAAAAAACWE/xClq644Ca04/s640/Aruncus.jpg" /></a></div><br />

When I left 5 days ago there was not a single flower open on rhododendrons. Today 'Cunningham's White', the earliest of my rhods, is in full bloom. I especially like the combination of pink flower buds and white flowers.<br />
<br />

Just a week ago spring felt very slow, but during last days things started to change quicker and quicker. One of my hosta beds is bursting with intensively growing spring bulbs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VTXbdBQHPCg/T6AEjMokixI/AAAAAAAACSw/vTaFtk7xYO4/s1600/hosta-bed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VTXbdBQHPCg/T6AEjMokixI/AAAAAAAACSw/vTaFtk7xYO4/s640/hosta-bed.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
In this mix of Hyacinths I planted several bulbs that I saved from last year together with some newly bought. All of them are blooming fine except for 'Odysseus', the beautifully peachy colored one in the back of the mix. Its flower spikes are very prone to falling, which makes it difficult to appreciate the beauty of the flowers.<br />
<br />
<center><span style="color: #ccfb5d;"><b><i>Hyacinth mix with Hyacinth 'Pink Pearl' in the front</i></b></span></center><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VMBbconr-64/T6AEjasKBaI/AAAAAAAACS8/pUInTBtPGKk/s1600/Hiacynth-mix.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VMBbconr-64/T6AEjasKBaI/AAAAAAAACS8/pUInTBtPGKk/s640/Hiacynth-mix.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<center><span style="color: #ccfb5d;"><b><i>Hyacinth 'City of Haarlem'</i></b></span></center><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ao4FnKGvaSc/T6AEkDfdeKI/AAAAAAAACTI/As0XE1hsKi4/s1600/Hiacynth-City-of-Haarlem.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ao4FnKGvaSc/T6AEkDfdeKI/AAAAAAAACTI/As0XE1hsKi4/s640/Hiacynth-City-of-Haarlem.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I can't stop admire the brightest color of <i>Tulipa kaufmanniana</i> 'Show Winner'. Here comes a close-up of the open flower.<br />
<br />
<center><span style="color: #ccfb5d;"><b><i>Tulipa kaufmanniana 'Show Winner'</i></b></span></center><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cN2A0XC-Ru8/T6AEkqDzR1I/AAAAAAAACTU/npSYZs9epBY/s1600/Tulipa-kaufmanniana-Show-Winner.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cN2A0XC-Ru8/T6AEkqDzR1I/AAAAAAAACTU/npSYZs9epBY/s640/Tulipa-kaufmanniana-Show-Winner.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<i>Fritillaria meleagris</i> are growing in that spot for a 3rd season and multiplying steadily.<br />
<br />

<br />
Wood anemones <i>Anemone nemorosa</i> are wildly growing in the garden and popping up everywhere.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ijZnK8TVhaQ/T6ALsqv2ruI/AAAAAAAACTw/wbOr2zYVaw0/s1600/Anemone-nemorosa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ijZnK8TVhaQ/T6ALsqv2ruI/AAAAAAAACTw/wbOr2zYVaw0/s640/Anemone-nemorosa.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Maidenhair Fern <i>Adiantum pedatum</i> is amazingly beautiful perennial in all stages of its development. Now it looks like this.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ax3I5I2MPV0/T6ALtaGh_xI/AAAAAAAACUI/OKJtHLR5_iY/s1600/Adiantum-Pedatum.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ax3I5I2MPV0/T6ALtaGh_xI/AAAAAAAACUI/OKJtHLR5_iY/s640/Adiantum-Pedatum.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Leaves of the oldest <i>Astilbe</i> growing in my garden are deep red this early in the season. The name of this variety is probably 'Erika', it was bought without tag and is waiting to be identified for sure.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dAjbdXsfh_U/T6ALtoTD42I/AAAAAAAACUU/aKn2lvz03m8/s1600/Astilbe1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dAjbdXsfh_U/T6ALtoTD42I/AAAAAAAACUU/aKn2lvz03m8/s640/Astilbe1.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
It's very exciting to watch hostas coming up in the spring. How well did they overwinter? How well did they feel last season? How much did they mature? Here are two favorites that obviously increased since last year. <br />
<br />
<center><span style="color: #ccfb5d;"><b><i>Rhino Hide</i></b></span></center><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qmzYlEqAY50/T6ALuFxHCXI/AAAAAAAACUg/l9cqbVcdoLU/s1600/Rhino-Hide.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qmzYlEqAY50/T6ALuFxHCXI/AAAAAAAACUg/l9cqbVcdoLU/s640/Rhino-Hide.jpg" /></a></div><br />

Spring is so slow this year. After a few weeks of unusually warm weather in the beginning of March spring took a break and getting pretty late. But today it was sunny and warm for the first time during last weeks. My young dahlia plants spent first night and day out in the greenhouse.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8KxwwR5T-wQ/T5WyamJT43I/AAAAAAAACRw/VHK3nDXGUQo/s1600/Dahlia-in-greenhouse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="267" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8KxwwR5T-wQ/T5WyamJT43I/AAAAAAAACRw/VHK3nDXGUQo/s400/Dahlia-in-greenhouse.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
One of my garden beds is filled with early flowering bulbs and today they were happy to meet sun. I used my chance to take some pictures.<br />
<br />

Perennials look very pretty when just unfurling from the winter sleep. Leaves are fresh and strongly colored.<br />

Since January my mind was occupied with thoughts on organizing the stand for Svenska Dahliasällskapet and now I have a bit strange feeling that I don't need to worry about how everything would work out any more. We all had a great time. Interest in our stand was enormous, many new and experienced dahlia enthusiasts found their way to us. It was very nice to meet all the fair visitors and to share our passion for these magnificent plants. Here are some pictures from the 3rd day of the fair in our stand.<br />

My dahlias have started their preparation for the new season back in the middle of February. I brought up from the winter storage some tubers of my favorite varieties as well as tubers that I received in <a href="http://olgochka.blogspot.se/2012/01/happy-new-year.html">exchange</a> with Nadezhda and those that I <a href="http://olgochka.blogspot.se/2012/01/happy-new-year.html">bought</a> from Peter Haslhofer and put them in trays filled with potting media. It took a few days for the tubers to wake up and start to sprout with new growth.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UPMlAabnSVU/T4Q0ZVb9u6I/AAAAAAAACOA/XeaLdMk7fDY/s1600/mother-tubers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" width="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UPMlAabnSVU/T4Q0ZVb9u6I/AAAAAAAACOA/XeaLdMk7fDY/s640/mother-tubers.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Since beginning of March I'm taking cuttings. It takes about 14 days for them to root in moist coir substrate in a mini-greenhouse.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sBc4FsF7E6g/T4Q0n-SlTkI/AAAAAAAACOY/ZrG_IQEKlvE/s1600/mini-greenhouse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" width="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sBc4FsF7E6g/T4Q0n-SlTkI/AAAAAAAACOY/ZrG_IQEKlvE/s640/mini-greenhouse.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vMco4Ln8tSs/T4Q0oVvsnaI/AAAAAAAACOk/zLyaOLFu6yQ/s1600/cuttings-in-greenhouse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" width="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vMco4Ln8tSs/T4Q0oVvsnaI/AAAAAAAACOk/zLyaOLFu6yQ/s640/cuttings-in-greenhouse.jpg" /></a></div><br />
As soon as the roots appear I plant cuttings in nutritious potting mixture and keep them on sunny windowsills.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zx_cZEAmsaE/T4Q0vXQ6fnI/AAAAAAAACOw/teVpoIcsNEE/s1600/cuttings.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" width="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zx_cZEAmsaE/T4Q0vXQ6fnI/AAAAAAAACOw/teVpoIcsNEE/s640/cuttings.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-d89TKkzRquc/T4Q0wB-3EOI/AAAAAAAACO8/cTRt4-cMe2g/s1600/cuttings2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" width="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-d89TKkzRquc/T4Q0wB-3EOI/AAAAAAAACO8/cTRt4-cMe2g/s640/cuttings2.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Last summer the plants developed from cuttings were growing very well and flowering earlier then those that were grown from tubers. Tuber production from cuttings was fine as well. Some of the cuttings I'm planning to offer for <a href="http://olgochka.blogspot.se/2012/04/nordiska-tradgardar-2012-april-12-15.html">sale in our society stand at Nordiska Trädgårdar 2012</a>.</div>Olgahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06171908843920946025noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-944410182430300154.post-6604705210993911122012-04-09T22:27:00.000+02:002012-04-09T22:27:34.893+02:00Nordiska Trädgårdar 2012, April 12-15<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<p> Long Easter weekend is almost over. On Thursday starts the main garden event of the spring - <a href="http://www.nordiskatradgardar.se/">Nordiska Trädgårdar 2012</a>. The fair lasts on from April 12 to April 15. This year I'm responsible for organizing of <a href="http://www.svenskdahlia.se/">Svenska Dahliasällskapets</a> stand. The Stockholms planning group worked hard to organize a twice larger stand then our society used to have. We'll have several workshops on tuber dividing and planting dahlia seedlings. Many unusual and hard to find dahlia varieties will be offered for sale by our members. Everybody is very welcome to visit our stand A01:20!</p>
<p> There is an excess of tubers in my stock that I'd have for sale as well. These sales are raising funds for Svenska Dahliasällskapet and give me opportunity to get new varieties to my collection. I shall have tubers of about 50 different varieties to offer to the fair visitors. Here comes the list of these varieties:</p>

...and around the garden is quite intensive. This beautiful female of cross spider <i>Araneus diadematus</i> lived on the window of our house last summer. She was almost 2.5 cm in size, really big and was catching wasps in her net.<br />
Couple of weeks ago the municipality started to build a road close to us so the forest will be partially cut over. This forest is providing home for quite a lot of animals. Roe deers, hares, badger and foxes could be found here. Björn took very nice pictures of some of these animals when they were passing by our garden. Hopefully, all of them will survive deforestation and will stay around for long.<br />
<br />
Roe deers are beautiful animals and I started to like them even more since we built a fence that keeps them away from our garden. They can't feed anymore on my tulips, coral bells and astilbes and don't spread ticks in the garden.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-A8w7NChBfL0/Tw8SscAqvdI/AAAAAAAACLk/J36vuOikrgg/s1600/deer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-A8w7NChBfL0/Tw8SscAqvdI/AAAAAAAACLk/J36vuOikrgg/s640/deer.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<br />
This fox likes to tease our neighbors dog by coming close to their fence and staying there for a while.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-f4vKga2p7Es/Tw8SstyyiBI/AAAAAAAACL0/iTxspzx8xqo/s1600/fox.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-f4vKga2p7Es/Tw8SstyyiBI/AAAAAAAACL0/iTxspzx8xqo/s640/fox.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Every summer morning around 7:30 this hare used to pass by our garden. Here he is checking out our car on the parking.<br />
<br />

What does gardener do during garden winter dormancy? Yes, planning and organizing. Last few weeks I was busy with updating the page with <a href="http://olgochka.blogspot.com/p/my-dahlia-list.html">the catalog of my dahlia collection</a>. And now it is up to date with photos from the past season. All varieties that have active links with their names were grown in my garden during past season 2011. Those that have not been linked yet are newcomers that I acquired recently for the coming season 2012. So far I received new varieties from 2 sources, from my Russian friend <a href="http://nnkcvet.narod.ru/">Nadezhda</a> and from Austrian <a href="http://peters-dahlien.at/">Peter's Dahlias</a>. Here is a preview of these new acquisitions.<br />

Passed November was unusually warm. I asked Björn to compare the temperature measurements made by our garden weather station in November 2010 and 2011. The difference is quite impressive. Here are the data for average, minimal and maximal temperatures compared:<br />
<br />
<center><table border="1" cellpadding="10%"><tr align="center"> <th></th><th>Average, °C</th><th>min, °C</th><th>max, °C</th> </tr>
<tr align="center"> <td>November 2010</td><td>0.09</td><td>-11.3</td><td>9.8</td> </tr>
<tr align="center"> <td>November 2011</td><td>5.49</td><td>-0.5</td><td>12.3</td> </tr>
</table></center><br />
<br />
Today was +4°C, rainy and very windy, no winter signs yet. Such warm long autumn gives me hope for a mild winter and early spring. It's a lot to look forward in the garden and around...<br />

No winter signs yet in the garden and some perennials still look fresh. Blue flowers are opening on evergreen periwinkle. For the first time in 3 years I see the flowering of the only Chrysanthemum that I have in my garden. It is a very late variety and in previous years it was freezing before opening flower buds. Can't say that it was worth to wait to see this flowers...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cv8HXsgpmdg/TtAUpbIdGpI/AAAAAAAACJE/7xT-SGkmdX8/s1600/Chrys.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cv8HXsgpmdg/TtAUpbIdGpI/AAAAAAAACJE/7xT-SGkmdX8/s640/Chrys.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Coral bells look perfect. <i>Lime Marmalade</i> is the brightest. It's nicely contrasting with <i>Crimson Curls</i> growing next to it. Color of <i>Marmalade</i> turned greener than it was in early summer, but is still glowing. <i>Sashay</i> is not completely recovered after being partially eaten by roe-deer. I hope to see its full potential next year. <br />

Newly planted Garden Phloxes are still green and slowely but, hopefully, surely are establishing in their new bed. Mulch of shredded leaves is protecting them from night frosts.<br />

It's late November and I finally finished preparing my dahlia tubers for winter storage. I had tubers from ~140 plants to dig, wash, dry, clean and divide this year. I dug them all back in the middle of October washed all dirt off. Here is the picture showing 1/3 of my tuber harvest right after washing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gPOabytJ-fM/TsgQaF-Wy8I/AAAAAAAACHE/1ygoZIpfy64/s1600/dug-tubers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gPOabytJ-fM/TsgQaF-Wy8I/AAAAAAAACHE/1ygoZIpfy64/s640/dug-tubers.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Then tubers were kept in the outside storage until I was ready to divide them. I prefer to divide tubers in autumn. Divided tubers take much less storage space. Removing of stalks and old tubers significantly decreases rotting of divided tubers. And of course dividing of so many tubers takes time which is so precious in the Spring that you don't want to waste it on things that could be done earlier. With this mild autumn weather I was not in a hurry to bring them in the basement so it took about 3 weeks to make them ready for storage. In our outside shelter temperature still stays around 5°C which is perfect for tubers to stay fresh and firm.<br />
How to divide tubers? First have a look at the tuber and find the place where new tubers are attached to the root crown that surrounds the stalk. On this tuber of <i>'Colorado Classic'</i> there are 2 stalks visible with multiple tubers attached to each of them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Myfr6OKo-bM/TsgM43U4_oI/AAAAAAAACGM/t7P6xWdfdkQ/s1600/tuber2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Myfr6OKo-bM/TsgM43U4_oI/AAAAAAAACGM/t7P6xWdfdkQ/s640/tuber2.jpg"/></a></div><br />
The stalks have to be removed. Red line shows where to cut to remove them. Yellow arrows are pointing at the visible buds at the crown of each tuber part. Each part of the divided tuber should contain a visible bud at the root crown. From this bud a whole new plant will develop and produce new root growth.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KTTWzUf1h2k/TsgM5Ezry8I/AAAAAAAACGg/gOSeklTGd90/s1600/tuber2-arrows.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KTTWzUf1h2k/TsgM5Ezry8I/AAAAAAAACGg/gOSeklTGd90/s640/tuber2-arrows.jpg"/></a></div><br />
With one of the stalks removed there are more buds visible on other tuber parts. Red cross indicating the old mother tuber that has to be discarded. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nDmI3IYKQNM/TsgM5jTbndI/AAAAAAAACGo/a7QrgOXTMqQ/s1600/tuber3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nDmI3IYKQNM/TsgM5jTbndI/AAAAAAAACGo/a7QrgOXTMqQ/s640/tuber3.jpg"/></a></div><br />
Very often old mother tubers are getting rot inside of them. This rot can spread to the rest of the tuber.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-S3VrSLcf-7c/TsgaariSelI/AAAAAAAACHU/PrDSH76EXeU/s1600/old-tuber-rot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-S3VrSLcf-7c/TsgaariSelI/AAAAAAAACHU/PrDSH76EXeU/s640/old-tuber-rot.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Now the tuber can be cut in pieces with a sharp garden clipper.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HVONB5RIr6g/TsgM53ZcIQI/AAAAAAAACG0/rBxOaOL9Z_I/s1600/tuber4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HVONB5RIr6g/TsgM53ZcIQI/AAAAAAAACG0/rBxOaOL9Z_I/s640/tuber4.jpg"/></a></div><br />
As a result I got 12 tubers, which each will produce a plant of the same size as mother plant.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rXTjMBwsJTE/TsgcGeXQzWI/AAAAAAAACHk/ATNpHEUnDBM/s1600/divided.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rXTjMBwsJTE/TsgcGeXQzWI/AAAAAAAACHk/ATNpHEUnDBM/s640/divided.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Size of tubers in dahlias depends on the variety. Some can be divided in 10-12 pieces some in 2-3 pieces only. Here is ~3/4 of my dahlia tuber harvest divided and waiting to be packed for storage. I store them in a sealed plastic bag with a bit of vermiculite or wooden shavings added to keep tubers dry. Bags are stored in Styrofoam boxes in the cool basement.<br />
