A few months ago I have been contacted by a journalist from 'Aftonbladet Härligt Hemma'. She asked whether they can write an article about my dahlias for this magazine. That was an unexpected surprise for me since I'm just in my second year of keeping dahlias and can't consider myself as an experienced gardener. And I always thought that garden articles are written about well-known old gardens with fancy landscape design and ideally trimmed grass-lawns. Nevertheless in the end of August Ulrika and Gustav came to my garden to interview me and to take pictures. Last weekend the issue of 'Härligt Hemma' with the article was published. I'm grateful to Mary Ohlson who recommended my dahlia collection for this publication.

Dahlia season 2011: part I
It’s been a while since I posted last time. Summer is in its peak right now and a lot is going on in the garden. Dahlias are starting to be a centre of attention. Most of potted dahlias are flowering for a long time now. Gallery Art Nouveau was the first to flower back in May. It was followed by Melody Mambo, Gallery Salvador, Gallery Matisse, Gallery Art Fair and Melody Dora. Melody Latin and Melody Dixie started to flower a bit later from last days of June. The last low growing variety left to flower is Melody Harmony. Although it already opened first inflorescence I can’t see it since it’s hidden among leaves. But more flowers should open soon on top of shoots. Let’s take a closer look at each plant.
Gallery Art Nouveau. 4 cuttings planted in a 10l pot. Bright color of informally shaped inflorescence nicely contrasting with dark green leaves.
Melody Mambo. 4 cuttings planted in a 15l pot. Very dark deep red satiny inflorescence tops medium green lush foliage.
Gallery Salvador. 4 cuttings planted in a 10l pot. Striking contrast of pretty large, Ø10+ cm, inflorescence on a very low growing, 35 cm, plant. Scapes could be longer to bring inflorescence higher on top of the foliage.
Gallery Matisse. 3 cuttings planted in a 7l pot. Heavily flowering lowest growing pot dahlia in my collection. First inflorescences were showing ugly open center but later opened flowerheads look fine.
Gallery Art Fair. 4 cuttings planted in a 10l pot. The most heavily flowering of my pot dahlias.
Melody Dora. 4 cuttings planted in a 20l pot. This year inflorescence size is much larger than it was last year. I think this is my favourite pot dahlia right now.
Melody Latin. 4 cuttings planted in a 20l pot. Actually it appeared to be only 3 cuttings of Melody Latin and 1 cutting Melody Dixie. I guess I've mixed the labels ☺. But the combination looks good. The shape and size of flower heads is very similar only color is different.

Dahlia cuttings are getting roots
To my surprise dahlia cuttings that I'm taking since March are all getting roots. Windowsills are being filled with pots.
Already now I have 30 planted dahlias and there are 60 more cuttings waiting for their turn. Not all tubers are equally productive. As expected low-growing Holland-bred varieties like Gallery Art Fair or Melody Harmony are producing a lot of cuttings, 10-20 per tuber, while some more rare varieties like Nick Sr produced none so far. Varieties originating from Peter Haslhofer like Hapet Red King and some seedlings are producing 3-5 cuttings per tuber. Different varieties are rooting with different speed. The fastest are again Gallery varieties, they are rooting in a week. In the same conditions 2 cuttings of Vicki did not root since March 13. They are not rotting either, just sitting there and waiting for something.
In between planting dahlias I had to take care of one more beloved flower today - my 9.5-year-old Zwergschnauzer Little Spoon. It was time to trim her winter coat since it started to fall off and cover everything with black wire-like hairs. Here are some before and after pictures of the process.

My way of growing dahlias in pots: Part II
Spring is getting closer! Days are sunny and snow is slowly melting away. My dahlia tubers are waking up and yesterday I already took first cuttings. More cuttings on the way...
Today I will continue to share my views and experience on growing dahlias in pots. How to get a nicely shaped dahlia bush? In many articles on growing dahlias I read recommendations to let dahlia grow in 1 stalk and to pinch the stalk when it gets 4 pairs of leaves. I followed this recommendations since they promised to help dahlia bush to grow more branches and produce more flowers. But these recommendation do not work for all dahlia varieties! There are low growing varieties that will produce very nice thick bush from just one stalk like Melody Dora for example. But Gallery Salvador didn't look good at all being grown as single stalk. Here you can see one of the two branches it produced. Of course, there were not many flowers either.
Gallery Salvador
The single stalk of Gallery Art Nouveau was broken with wind and I didn't trim or pinch it anymore when new stalks grew again. It developed nice thick bush with many flowers.
Gallery Art Nouveau
So next summer I will plant 3-4 cutting per pot for Gallery and some Melody varieties and I will not pinch them.
Some other aspects of growing dahlias in pots like starting and planting tubers, fertilizing and fixing support are very nicely described in the article by Barbara Jenke. As she recommended I started tubers indoors in April and got first flowers in the end of June. Also I followed her recommendations on gradual filling of pots with potting mix while stalks were growing. Tubers ended up to be planted pretty deep, about 15 cm, but dahlias didn't care about that. I was not adding any liquid fertilizers during growing season since there was long-term fertilizer added before planting. Some of the lower leaves started to turn yellow in the of summer, perhaps, due to the lack of nitrogen or iron. So I will fertilize more with liquid fertilizers next season.
I'm pretty sure that next season will introduce some changes in my way of growing dahlias in pots described here. I learnt to not take all recommendations on trust but rather take them in consideration. Hopefully my dahlias will look better and please me even more...

My way of growing dahlias in pots: Part I
According to the calendar it's a first day of spring today. But when you look out you don't see any signs of spring. Everything is still perfectly white and frozen. Although I like snow I'm starting to get tired of it...
Today I got a comment from natalka_2 on one of my previous posts, she asked for the tips on growing pot dahlias. Perfect topic for a sping start.
My way of growing dahlias in pots is mostly based on the very detailed article by Barbara Jenke published on ADS homepage. I was not following all of her recommendations exactly but adjusted the method for my own use. So, what is important to succeed with pot dahlias in my opinion?
First of all the size of the pot. The bigger the pot is the easier to take care of the plant. I used standard plastic pots of 25-45 cm in diameter with volume of 10-20 liters. These pots are steady enough to balance a thick dahlia bush up to 60-70 cm tall. Root system was developing freely in a large volume and produced very nice tubers that were easy to store until spring.
I filled the pots with potting mixture completely with no separate drainage layer. Strong dahlia bush on a hot summer day is draining water extemely quickly so that it's never can be too much water. Especially if a light potting mixture was chosen. I've used ordinary bagged garden peat-based mixture that holds water well and stays air-filled at the same time. And even if you've watered too much this extra water can always run out through the holes in the bottom.
In the lower part of the pot I mixed some granulated long-lasting fertilizer together with a couple of tea spoons of gel-forming crystals. These together provide nutrition in the root area and also protect roots from drying too much in case you miss watering time.
Dahlias like sun, a lot of it. I kept my pots on an open terrace with Southern exposure. It was getting pretty hot there during mid-day so enough watering is important. I was also showering dahlias directly on leaves to increase humidity around, they loved it.
Somewhere I've read that low growing dahlias don't need support. I followed that statement and couple of my Gallery dahlia bushes were broken at the base on a windy day. That's how I learnt another important rule: even low growing varieties need support to stand against wind. I inserted a simple wooden sticks in the middle of each pot. The sticks were long enough to tie dahlia stalk to them and short enough to be not visible among the leaves. Next year I will also make sure that the sticks are strong enough to not bend under a heavy dahlia bush.
That's all for now, I'll continue with the rest of my tips later.

Some more of Melody dahlias
Another pot variety that I liked very much was Melody Gipsy. Flower heads of bright pink color with yellowish center, pretty large for low growing dahlia, were placed on very high strong stems. It could make a nice cutting variety if it would be more floriferous. I should let it grow in 3 stalks instead of one next summer.
Melody Gipsy
Of course I grew the famous Melody Harmony. Nowadays varieties with dark leaves are very popular. Melody Harmony is a nice example of that kind of dahlias since its pale lilac flower heads are contrasting well with very dark purple green leaves. It developed thick bush but flowers had very short stems and were slightly hiding among leaves. So there is still need for breeding more perfect dark leave low growing double dahlia...
Melody Harmony
Melody Latin was flowering with very bright yellow flowers on long stems. For some reason earwigs liked its flowers also so there were not many uneaten flowers left. I should let this variety to grow in 3 stalks to get thicker bush. The color in the pictures is a bit pinkish due to evening sunlight, otherwise flowers were pure yellow.

Some of my pot dahlias
Last year I have planted some low growing varieties in large pots to have them on the terrace. All of them were flowering but not all were equally decorative if judge the whole plant. The most impressive was Melody Dora. This plant was growing fast and developed a nice symmetrical bush of about 60 cm height. I let it grow in one stalk and still it looked very thick and was covered with flowers since mid-June.
Melody Dora
My second favourite was Melody Mambo. The single stalk that I left from the beginning got broken at the base but there were 3 more quickly growing instead. The bush was covered with many nicely shaped medium sized flowers of very deep red colour. Another good thing about this variety was that earwigs didn't like to eat its flowers as much as they did others.
Melody Mambo
Melody Dixie developed a nice bush but not as thick as did Melody Dora. And flowering was also a bit less. Nicely shaped flower heads were raised above foliage and had very nice soft colours.
