Beginning of new dahlia season 2012
My dahlias have started their preparation for the new season back in the middle of February. I brought up from the winter storage some tubers of my favorite varieties as well as tubers that I received in exchange with Nadezhda and those that I bought from Peter Haslhofer and put them in trays filled with potting media. It took a few days for the tubers to wake up and start to sprout with new growth.
Since beginning of March I'm taking cuttings. It takes about 14 days for them to root in moist coir substrate in a mini-greenhouse.
As soon as the roots appear I plant cuttings in nutritious potting mixture and keep them on sunny windowsills.
Last summer the plants developed from cuttings were growing very well and flowering earlier then those that were grown from tubers. Tuber production from cuttings was fine as well. Some of the cuttings I'm planning to offer for sale in our society stand at Nordiska Trädgårdar 2012.

Nordiska Trädgårdar 2012, April 12-15
Long Easter weekend is almost over. On Thursday starts the main garden event of the spring - Nordiska Trädgårdar 2012. The fair lasts on from April 12 to April 15. This year I'm responsible for organizing of Svenska Dahliasällskapets stand. The Stockholms planning group worked hard to organize a twice larger stand then our society used to have. We'll have several workshops on tuber dividing and planting dahlia seedlings. Many unusual and hard to find dahlia varieties will be offered for sale by our members. Everybody is very welcome to visit our stand A01:20!
There is an excess of tubers in my stock that I'd have for sale as well. These sales are raising funds for Svenska Dahliasällskapet and give me opportunity to get new varieties to my collection. I shall have tubers of about 50 different varieties to offer to the fair visitors. Here comes the list of these varieties:

Dahlia season 2011: part VII, last dahlias for the season
Tonight SMHI is predicting first real freezing. So I guess I'll find frozen dahlia garden tomorrow morning. Anyway it's time to dig them up. Here come some last dahlia flower pictures for this year.
Pooh is the only collarette variety in my collection. It was created by Swan Island Dahlias in US (1998). This dahlia I got from Lilian at the meeting of Svenska Dahliasällskapet members. When it started to bloom I was impressed by size of the inflorescence ~10 cm.
Hillcrest Suffusion (Jackson, UK) is a nice decorative ball of warm peachy-pink color, freely flowering.
The latest to flower was Black Jack (Haslhofer, Austria, 2003). It's definitely worth to wait. It's the darkest dahlia I've seen, almost black. It has dark leaves as well. Very special blooms.

Taxinge Slott Trädgårdsmässan 2011-09-03
Bergianska Trädgårdens Höstfest 2011-09-04
That was a busy weekend. On Saturday we went to the small garden show in Taxinge Slott. It takes place every year on 1st weekend in September. Last year we have been there for the first time and liked a lot both the show and the beautiful park around Taxinge Slott. This year the show was much smaller than last time, there were much less participants especially plant nurseries from nearby towns. So less plants for me to buy ☺. My favorite participant from last year was there this time too and I got a large beautiful Heuchera 'Autumn Leaves' from them. Their stand was full of good looking plants of nice size.
From Bürgers Växtgård I spontaneously bought a white-blue Monkshood Aconitum carmichaelii. It is just about to open blooms.
The weather was great and we had a very nice walk around the park. There are some nice places to have a look at.
On Sunday morning we cut some dahlias, took the smallest of my fine looking pots with Gallery Art Nouveau and went to Bergianska Trädgårdens Höstfest. Irene and Charlotte have already prepared a nice stand for presenting Svenska Dahliasällskapet. This was a perfect day - sunny and warm. A lot of people came to Bergianska garden. It's always plenty of joy to talk with people about our favorite flowers and show them. There was no chance to bring my camera with me, so no pictures of my own this time. But Irene uploaded nice pictures on her blog. Some pictures were taken by Kerstin and uploaded on Facebook. I'm linking to them here.

Bergianska Trädgårdens Höstfest.
Dahlia season 2011: part V
Tomorrow Sunday September 4th there will be Höstfest in Bergianska Botanical Garden. Svenksa Dahliasällskapet is participating there and I'll be there to show some of my dahlias. Here are some previews of what I might bring with me tomorrow. These are all large flowering dahlias originating mostly from US except for Hapet Spartan, Austrian variety.

Meeting with Svenska Dahliasällskapet members
Yesterday there was a perfect day to meet members of Svenska Dahliasällskapet at my place. I enjoyed very much to talk about dahlias and not only dahlias and to have some coffee on our terrace in a nice company. Kerstin and Irene took some pictures and kindly let me to use them for this post.
Marie Ohlson shared her views on important characteristics that good dahlia variety should have.
The day was pretty warm and sunny so that most everyone tried to stay in the shadow.
I hope we'll meet again and see more gardens of each other.

Nordiska Trädgårdar. Impressions
The rest of the Fair was very busy and had some nice exhibitors. In the part of the Fair presenting various garden enthusiast societies I liked the most our neighborers stand of Svenska Bonsaisällskapet with their gorgeous Japanese maple bonsai. The cute small rhododendrons and flowering apple tree were beautiful too. Also I couldn't pass by the stand of Svenska Saintpauliasällskapet. I recalled my old love that I had a few years ago to that cozy little plant when I kept a 50+ varieties collection on a light stand in my bedroom. Since then only 3 varieties survived but yesterday I got 5 more leaves of varieties new to me. I'm curious how they will perform.
The main part of the Fair was a bit smaller than it was last year. Some exhibitors like Zetas or Plantagen were not presented although I didn't miss them there :). Of course, some participants were the same as in Kista Mässan Rum & Trädgård. I lost count of Pelargonium nurseries, it seems the be to main favourite plant of Sweden. In the stand of Elises Blomsterlökar I found a bit different assortment of tubers and of course couldn't resist to buy some dahlias. Plantbutiken stand was full of tiny but very healthy looking rooted cuttings of petunias, pelargoniums and of course Calibrachoa - one of the best plants for hanging baskets. Wibrant Trädgård Rockdala had a bit different choice of fuchsia varieties and I got 2 more for my own collection. I was very glad to find stand selling coconut fiber blocks which I consider one of the best rooting medias for cuttings.
I had a great time and already looking forward for the next year Nordiska Trädgårdar.

Soon Nordiska Trädgårdar...
My preparations to participation in Nordiska Trädgårdar started already a week ago. I checked tubers that I can provide for the lottery and sale at Svenska Dahliasällskapet stand and now making labels for them. There are 15 varieties that I raised and overwintered and can bring to the sale.
Apache
Canary Fubuki
Dutch Explosion
English Breakfast
Ferncliff Illusion
Gallery Art Fair
GH Lammerse
Melody Gipsy
Melody Latin
Melody Mambo
Mick's Peppermint
Nuit d’Été
Tahoma Star
Tireno
I was planning to have some rooted cuttings for sale too but I started to take cuttings too late and not many of them managed to get roots by now. So there will be only tubers. I'm looking forward to see whether exhibition visitors would like to buy my dahlias at all, it will be the first time for me to sell my own tubers.
Another nice thing happened few days ago - I received my first French dahlia order from Plantes et Jardins of varieties created by Ernest Turc. I learnt about French dahlias from my Russian friend Nadezhda and looked for them in Sweden. Surprisingly to me French varieties are not sold in Swedish garden stores as they are in Russia. That's a pity since many of them are great garden dahlias and they differ a lot from the standard assortment from Holland.
