Dahlia update
All dahlias are planted. This year I had very narrow time window to plant everything and it was a bit stressful. But now it's done and I got time to update my collection catalog. There are about 180 plants of 83 varieties planted in the garden this year. Some are new for the collection. Some I liked so much that they were kept since last year. Some varieties are out of the garden since they didn't fit my taste or were lost during winter storage.

Happy New Year!
Winter keeps the garden dormant, but new year has started and new gardening season 2012 is getting closer. What does gardener do during garden winter dormancy? Yes, planning and organizing. Last few weeks I was busy with updating the page with the catalog of my dahlia collection. And now it is up to date with photos from the past season. All varieties that have active links with their names were grown in my garden during past season 2011. Those that have not been linked yet are newcomers that I acquired recently for the coming season 2012. So far I received new varieties from 2 sources, from my Russian friend Nadezhda and from Austrian Peter's Dahlias. Here is a preview of these new acquisitions.

My Dahlia Garden was featured in 'Aftonbladet 'Härligt Hemma'
A few months ago I have been contacted by a journalist from 'Aftonbladet Härligt Hemma'. She asked whether they can write an article about my dahlias for this magazine. That was an unexpected surprise for me since I'm just in my second year of keeping dahlias and can't consider myself as an experienced gardener. And I always thought that garden articles are written about well-known old gardens with fancy landscape design and ideally trimmed grass-lawns. Nevertheless in the end of August Ulrika and Gustav came to my garden to interview me and to take pictures. Last weekend the issue of 'Härligt Hemma' with the article was published. I'm grateful to Mary Ohlson who recommended my dahlia collection for this publication.

Taxinge Slott Trädgårdsmässan 2011-09-03
Bergianska Trädgårdens Höstfest 2011-09-04
That was a busy weekend. On Saturday we went to the small garden show in Taxinge Slott. It takes place every year on 1st weekend in September. Last year we have been there for the first time and liked a lot both the show and the beautiful park around Taxinge Slott. This year the show was much smaller than last time, there were much less participants especially plant nurseries from nearby towns. So less plants for me to buy ☺. My favorite participant from last year was there this time too and I got a large beautiful Heuchera 'Autumn Leaves' from them. Their stand was full of good looking plants of nice size.
From Bürgers Växtgård I spontaneously bought a white-blue Monkshood Aconitum carmichaelii. It is just about to open blooms.
The weather was great and we had a very nice walk around the park. There are some nice places to have a look at.
On Sunday morning we cut some dahlias, took the smallest of my fine looking pots with Gallery Art Nouveau and went to Bergianska Trädgårdens Höstfest. Irene and Charlotte have already prepared a nice stand for presenting Svenska Dahliasällskapet. This was a perfect day - sunny and warm. A lot of people came to Bergianska garden. It's always plenty of joy to talk with people about our favorite flowers and show them. There was no chance to bring my camera with me, so no pictures of my own this time. But Irene uploaded nice pictures on her blog. Some pictures were taken by Kerstin and uploaded on Facebook. I'm linking to them here.

Dahlia season 2011: part I
It’s been a while since I posted last time. Summer is in its peak right now and a lot is going on in the garden. Dahlias are starting to be a centre of attention. Most of potted dahlias are flowering for a long time now. Gallery Art Nouveau was the first to flower back in May. It was followed by Melody Mambo, Gallery Salvador, Gallery Matisse, Gallery Art Fair and Melody Dora. Melody Latin and Melody Dixie started to flower a bit later from last days of June. The last low growing variety left to flower is Melody Harmony. Although it already opened first inflorescence I can’t see it since it’s hidden among leaves. But more flowers should open soon on top of shoots. Let’s take a closer look at each plant.
Gallery Art Nouveau. 4 cuttings planted in a 10l pot. Bright color of informally shaped inflorescence nicely contrasting with dark green leaves.
Melody Mambo. 4 cuttings planted in a 15l pot. Very dark deep red satiny inflorescence tops medium green lush foliage.
Gallery Salvador. 4 cuttings planted in a 10l pot. Striking contrast of pretty large, Ø10+ cm, inflorescence on a very low growing, 35 cm, plant. Scapes could be longer to bring inflorescence higher on top of the foliage.
Gallery Matisse. 3 cuttings planted in a 7l pot. Heavily flowering lowest growing pot dahlia in my collection. First inflorescences were showing ugly open center but later opened flowerheads look fine.
Gallery Art Fair. 4 cuttings planted in a 10l pot. The most heavily flowering of my pot dahlias.
Melody Dora. 4 cuttings planted in a 20l pot. This year inflorescence size is much larger than it was last year. I think this is my favourite pot dahlia right now.
Melody Latin. 4 cuttings planted in a 20l pot. Actually it appeared to be only 3 cuttings of Melody Latin and 1 cutting Melody Dixie. I guess I've mixed the labels ☺. But the combination looks good. The shape and size of flower heads is very similar only color is different.
