Finally garden season 2011 is started, snow is gone and we enjoyed the first weekend in the garden. Björn took some sunny garden photos for my blog, thank you darling. There was a lot of things to do but I managed to fulfill my plans only in part since there are only 2 days in the weekend... So I had to decide what has to be done immediately and what can wait until the next weekend. Apple trees could not wait any longer for the spring pruning so I pruned them on Saturday. We have 3 apple trees of different Swedish varieties. They are 15-20 years old and were not pruned for 10 years until the last spring when I tried my theoretical knowledge in fruit tree pruning. To my surprise trees looked fine and produced plenty of apples in summer. This year I continued to cut branches that didn't fit my image of a good looking apple tree.
Next to this apple tree there is growing a young pine-tree. Our landlord was planning to cut it down since it can get too big in the future. I asked him to keep it and started to prune it last year to make a dwarf pine from it. It reacted to pruning by producing multiple new growth. This weekend I removed some low branches and decreased the height of the tree down to ~2m.
There are a lot of spring bulbs growing and flowering right now in
Hosta and
Heuchera garden-beds.
Björn's Japanese maples are waking up and their buds have amazingly bright orange-pink color.
Yesterday I finally planted
Dicentra spectabilis that I bought in Kistamässan in March. I kept it in bags with some soil mixture in the cool basement with no light. Some new growth rotted but there were new buds appearing and I hope it will be fine on its new place.
The warmer it get the more insects coming out. Yesterday I saw first mosquito. But some insects are very photogenic like this bee.
Садовый сезон 2011 открыт! Растаял последний снег, и мы с наслаждением провели в саду первые выходные сезона. Бьёрн фотографировал первые цветы. Я же занималась неотложными делами, такими как весенняя обрезка яблонь. У нас в саду три яблони разных шведских сортов. Им по 15-20 лет, и деревья не обрезались в течение последних 10 лет. До тех пор, пока я прошлой весной не решила попробовать на практике теоретические знания почерпнутые в интернете. К моему удивлению, летом деревья выглядели хорошо и обильно плодоносили. В этом году я обрезала те ветви, которые мне показались лишними в прошлом сезоне. Рядом с этой яблоней растет молодая сосенка. Хозяева нашего дома хотели спилить ее, опасаясь, что она скоро станет слишком велика для этого места. Я предложила им подожать, и начала обрезать ее прошлым летом. Из спящих почек полезли многочисленные побеги, и сосна стала более пушистой. Теперь я уменьшила ее высоту и сняла несоколько крупных нижних веток. Сосенка начинает походить на миниатюрное дерево.
Среди еще не проснувшихся хост и гейхер цветут первоцветы. На японских кленах набухли яркие оранжево-розовые почки. Я наконец посадила несколько кустов дицентры, купленной еще в начале марта и ожидавшей переезда в сад в темном подвале. Некоторые побеги подгнили, но появилось много новых, так что надеюсь, что дицентра пережила такую долгую передержку в темноте.
С наступление теплых дней все больше вылезает насекомых, в среду я уже видела первого комара. Но есть среди них и более приятные, как, например, эта пчела.
